For Ruth

After life, every life,
there's a final review,
tough questions are asked,
many answers worked through.

Did we live as we could,
as we should, as we might?
Was it worth all the hardships?
did we make it all right?

Did we love with giant hearts?
Did we see what was there?
Did we dance enough dawns?
Laugh out loud, laugh our share?

Did we stamp down our mark?
Did we seek out the best?
Did we drink it all down?
Did we earn our last rest?

I am sure that for her,
for our Ruth, we can say,
yes, she did, yes, she did,
did it all, her own way
