WANG, Dong Qian

Passed away suddenly on Friday 22 October 2010 from an intracerebral haemorrhage at his home in Wellington, New Zealand.

Dong was born in Liao Ning, China, and first born child of Cheng Yi Wang and Rui Fang Zhu. Dong was brother to Li Nan Wang, Dong Qiang Wang, Dong Wei Wang, and Dong Hong Wang.

Dong is survived by his wife Bing Shu Wu, his son Bob, daughter-in-law Alicia and grandson Ethan.

He was an exemplary student and received a Bachelor of Science (Honours) from Beijing University, China; a Master of Science from Institute of System Science and Beijing University, China; and a Doctor of Philosophy from La Trobe University, Australia. During his career he conducted much research and lectured in the field of mathematics and statistics in England and Australia; eventually taking a position as Associate Professor at the Victoria University of Wellington in New Zealand.

As well as being academically gifted, Dong was a talented sportsman. In particular, he was an avid table tennis player. Dong enjoyed travelling with his wife and son, and had seen much of the world. He was a keen gardener and took pride in his home.

However, above all, what Dong valued most was his relationships with his family and friends and he will be greatly missed by all who knew him. He will be remembered by all as a man who had a zest for life, consideration for all those he knew and having a positive and happy demeanor.

The funeral service will be held at the Main Crematorium Chapel, Rosehaugh Avenue, Karori Cemetery on Monday, November 1, 2010 at 11:00am, thereafter a wake will be held at the Victoria University of Wellington.
