Sandie was a woman of style, strength, and high standards. She believed in looking immaculate, keeping a spotless home, and, above all, never missing a good shopping trip. If there was a sale, she knew about it. If there was a wrinkle, it was dealt with. And if something weren’t up to standard - well, you’d soon know about it.
Born in Wellington on July 12, 1943, to John (Jack) and Rhoda (Bon) Hare, Sandie was the eldest sibling to John and Geoff. She trained as a nurse at Masterton Hospital, where she met Bob, the man who passed her high approval process and became her husband at just 19. Together, they raised four children—Lynda, Karen, Paul, and Nikki—and built a family that grew to include grandchildren, Struan, Rogan, James, Sarah, Rachel, Terran and Jackson and great-grandchildren, Parker, Lilly and Lincoln, all of whom she loved dearly (though probably not as much as she loved a perfectly coordinated outfit). Mother-in-law to Hugh, Kerryn, and Mat.
Her career spanned many industries—nursing, dry cleaning, farming, and furniture—but she spent over 40 years back in the medical field, first at Wellington Hospital’s Cardiology Clinic and later project manager and opening the original Wakefield Specialist Centre, where she worked for 25 years. She also dedicated over 40 years to Lions International, serving her community with the same precision and dedication she brought to everything else in life.
Sandie wasn’t one for emotional displays, but she showed her love in practical ways—by keeping things running smoothly, making sure everyone was looked after, and ensuring everything (and everyone) met her high standards. She leaves behind a family and friends who adored her, a legacy of service, and a wardrobe to be envied.
She will be deeply missed, but in her honor, we’ll keep our homes tidy, our outfits impeccable, and, of course, never pass up a good shopping trip.
Rest in peace, Sandie—you did it all, and you did it well.
Messages to the family may be left in Sandie's tribute book above or posted c/- 4 Moorefield Road, Johnsonville, Wellington 6037.
A private cremation has been held. A celebration of her life will be held at a later date. If you would like to attend, email Nikki on nmcintosh0202@gmail.com for details.
