Piers Lawrence

1987 – 2025

In a sudden, devastating loss for all who knew him, Piers Lawrence tragically left us on 2 July 2025 at the age of just 38.

A devoted husband to his partner of 15 years, Trisha, and proud dad of his cherished young daughters, Amelia and Charlotte in Belgium, he leaves behind his parents Roger and Judy in New Zealand; his brother Roland and sister-in-law Steph and nieces Sienna and Olivia in Australia; and his mother-in-law Karan in Canada. He will be greatly missed by his many aunts and uncles, cousins, friends, and colleagues all over the world.

Piers was a builder, a maker, a dreamer, an adventurer. A brilliant mathematical mind, with an innate technical proclivity, Piers loved to learn, think, create, and teach. He will be remembered for his natural ability to (re)build and repair, and to design and fabricate projects both practical and artistic. He truly loved people, drawing energy from discussion and exchange, and freely shared his time, enthusiasm, and expertise with friends, family, neighbours, clients, and scientific collaborators.

With a lifelong love of travel, nature, and being outdoors, Piers was at home in the mountains and on the water, in the bush or on the beach, on at least three continents. An excellent cook and hobby farmer, he raised goats and vegetables, and poured energy into cheesemaking, bread baking, preserving, and smoking meat.

Piers led a big, bold, adventurous life, cut devastatingly short. The loss is immeasurable to his many loved ones, who will deeply miss his adventurous spirit, open heart, warm collegiality, boundless energy, and appetite for discovery.

Private cremation has been held. A service for Piers will be held in Gee & Hickton’s Cornwall Manor, Corner Knights Rd & Cornwall St, Lower Hutt on Thursday 24 July at 2.00pm.
