MAURICE HANSON BASQUIN (Peter)

73, Dunedin New Zealand, passed away November 16, 2015. He was born September 30, 1942 in Evanston, Illinois to Maurice Hanson Basquin and Wilma Clark Basquin (both deceased). He has one sister, Susan Basquin of Santa Fe, New Mexico. The Basquin family moved to Frankfort, Indiana where Peter graduated from Frankfort High School in 1960; graduated from Wabash College in 1964 and received his MBA from Dartmouth College, Tuck School of Business, in 1966. Peter then joined the Peace Corps and was assigned to be the Dean of the Business College at Haile Selassie University in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. While in Ethiopia, he married Mary S. Basquin (Kit) in 1967. Back in the United States, he later became part owner of Harmeson Manufacturing Company in Frankfort, Indiana. The plant specialized in pressed board products and in later years, specialized in point of purchase display products with customers all over the United States. Peter did PhD courses in Forestry Economics at Purdue University but never finished his dissertation. He and Kit were active in the Art community and had theWashington Art Gallery. Peter was on the board of the Indiana Repertory Theatre in Indianapolis. Peter was also on the board and helped establish the Clinton County Humane Society, taking home many homeless animals himself. With their three children, they moved to Milwaukee, Wisconsin in 1979 with Peter commuting to Frankfort. Peter and Kit were later divorced. Peter married Jeannine Felabom Basquin in 1984 at their residence in Lebanon, Indiana where they purchased the home of Henry Ulen. That home had been badly damaged during the winter of 1983 and Peter and Jeannine restored the house to its former glory. Peter sold his share of Harmeson Mfg Company and they moved to Washington Island, Wisconsin in 1995. Peter always wanted to be a farmer and was especially interested in sustainable agriculture, and looked to where in the world that might work the best. Peter and Jeannine and their two girls moved to Washington Island, Wi in September 1995 where once again he built onto an old farm house. He was always building something (goat barn, machine shed; remodeled an old barn into a guest apartment and a writing studio). His sister Susan was living on the Island raising Angora Goats. The Island was too cold to do the sort of farming Peter dreamed of. Next stop, New Zealand. Peter, Jeannine, Anne and Jessica moved to the South Island of New Zealand to a small area called Taieri Mouth (just south of Dunedin on the east coast) in January 1997. What a major adventure to haul your family and your belongings thousands of miles away. On his beloved Sea Farm, he raised Scottish Highland Cattle, Hereford Cattle, Hungarian Fallow Deer and sheep of several varieties. Peter designed our home in NZ to capture the most beautiful views of the ocean and all the warmth of the sun. At the end of his life, the farm is currently winter grazing dairy cattle for other farmers. Peter is survived by his beloved wife Jeannine (Felabom) Basquin, his children William Virginia Basquin (San Francisco), William Clark Basquin (Chicago), Peter Lee Basquin (Chicago), Anne Marie Basquin (Taieri Mouth), Jessica Cameron Basquin (Dunedin), and Leah Keating (Atlanta), sister Susan Clark Basquin (Santa Fe, New Mexico), his grandchildren Billy, Madison and Jackson of Chicago and Tatyana, Ajani and Xavier of Atlanta also 3 nephews and 1 niece. A celebration service will be held at Hope and Sons chapel in Dunedin, New Zealand on Monday 23rd of November, 2015 at 12:30 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Humane Society of Clinton County 825 Izaak Walton Dr, Frankfort, Indiana 46041.
